3 IDIOTS: GOOD BUT NOT THE BEST FILM

3 idiots has become a movie that broke all box-office records.

3-idiots

It made me curious. What’s so fuzz about this movie? So I decide to watch the movie. I generally don’t like the way hindi movies are made. I hate Karan johar and Yash Chopra type of movie. My complaint with Hindi filmmakers is that, why do they stuff the movies with over sentiments, unnatural and stereotype situations. An ordinary hindi movie is highly predictable. They have the same story, same situations, morality lectures and all those rubbish. Then they also have situations that will not happen in real life.

Well, coming back to ‘3 idiots’, the movie started well. The opening was unlike other hindi movies. The story line was different. I like the comic scenes, especially the scene where they show the Raju’s family. I like this scene, because, generally Hindi films shows such situation with more melodrama. The characters also make fun of each other’s father and mother, which is uncommon in Hindi film especially within friends. The Rancho’s (played by Amir) confrontation with professors of the college is also hilarious.

The most funny scene is where, the character Chatur Ramalingam played by newcomer Omi Vaidya, reads a written speech in a function organized in the institute, where he reads, ‘balathkar’ for ‘chamtkar’ and ‘sthan‘ for ‘Dhan’.

The character of Rancho played by Amir Khan, is very different from the character of Ryan in the book ‘Five point Something’.
Here he is more genius, plays around with the characters of Raju(Sharman) and Farhan (Madhavan), questions the system. But, in the end scores more marks and succeed in having a first rank.

As the movie was progressing I was thinking that, I was lucky to watch a movie that is not like the conventional Hindi movies. But, second half of the movie proved me wrong.

In the second half the movie disappointed me. Why do this bollywood filmmakers feel that only unbelievable scenes can make a movie hit. Why do they stuff the movies with highly exaggerated, unimaginative, melodramatic twists? I think they believe that Hindi film audiences are idiots, who want these nonsense to enjoy a film. I hardly see any super hit movie without these stupid scenes. The same happened to this movie also.

It is revealed later that, Rancho, is exactly not Ranchhoddas, is actually impersonating Ranchhoddas i.e. Javed Jaffry. Why? Well, because, Rancho is more brilliant than actual Ranchhod das. So, he is sent to the Engineering college to study and earn rank, so that Javed jaffry can later use the degree earned by Amir khan. Wow, what a brilliant twist in the story. The book FPS by Chetan Bhagat does not have these nonsense. Then there are more avoidable ridiculous scenes, like- the delivery of a baby with the aid of a vacuum cleaner and web camera. The baby born initially does not cry, but when the holy Rancho chant the mantra ‘all iz well’, the baby starts to cry, (again, what an idea!); then there is a scene where the bride Kareena kapoor is virtually abducted from her marriage to meet Amir-totally avoidable scene.  The situation of marriage does have an important part in our films. Most important twists take place at the time of marriage, in our films-like it is then that the hero or heroin realize his or her love to other protagonist.

In the end we find that, Rancho is indeed a great scientist, who has opened a unique school in Ladak. And the movie ends with a happy note.

I think the second half ruined the film’s mood. The second half, which is contributed by the director and scrip writer- is highly unimaginative and awfull. Second half is highly predictable with lots of drama, that we have already seen in other movies.

I think the book is better than the movie. It is more realistic. The movie is exaggerated version of the book, with lots of masala that the bollywood filmmakers never forget to add.

MunnaBhai MBBS was lot better than the 3 idiots.

All the actors have done their part quiet well in this movie. I think Amir khan aged around 40 something, was not much convincing as a 20 something year old. I think he should consider his age before doing such roles.

The lesser known actor, Omi Vaidya has done a good job as a Hindi-challenged Chatur Ramalingam. But, his character is little bit over exaggerated. All, the characters in the movie are influenced by Rancho, in this movie except Chatur. The characters he influences are-strict ‘virus’ the director of the college, Hitler father of Farhan and character played by Kareena kapoor. But, Chatur or silencer, remains as obstinate and ‘padakku’. Why is this, is his heart made of stone or what. I think little bit of life should have been added to the character.

The songs were not so good.

The success of 3 idiots, generally goes to the marketing strategy adopted by the filmmakers and especially Amir khan. Also, it is better than the other films released around the same time.

In the end, I think Hindi film will never change or the financiers of the industry will not allow it to change. People will, continue to watch such films again and again and make the film super duper hit.
